Smart Money Concepts (SMC) is one of the most talked-about trading methodologies in crypto. The idea behind it is simple and appealing: retail traders consistently lose, institutions consistently win, so if you can spot where the institutions (“smart money”) are active, you can trade alongside them instead of against them.
This is your map of the territory before we dig into each tool in its own guide.
What makes SMC different
Traditional technical analysis often drowns you in dozens of indicators. SMC strips that away. It focuses on a handful of concepts you identify by simply drawing on the chart — no indicators required. You’re reading the structure of price itself.
The core SMC toolkit
Here’s the whole vocabulary, in one place:
- Break of Structure (BoS): confirmation that a trend is continuing.
- Change of Character (CHoCH): an early warning that a trend is reversing.
- Order Blocks (OB): zones where institutions left large pending orders.
- Breaker Blocks (BB): former order blocks that broke and now act in the opposite role.
- Fair Value Gaps (FVG): price inefficiencies that often get “filled” later.
- Liquidity: zones where many stop losses cluster — which institutions tend to target.

How to actually learn it
Don’t try to memorize everything at once — that’s the fastest way to get overwhelmed and apply none of it. Instead:
- Pick one concept (start with Break of Structure).
- Practice spotting it on 20-30 historical charts until it’s obvious to you.
- Only then move to the next concept.
Layering the tools one at a time is how it sticks.
A realistic expectation
SMC is powerful, but it isn’t magic. No single concept wins 100% of the time — they shift probability in your favor, nothing more. SMC works best combined with strong risk management and trend alignment. Treat anyone selling it as a guaranteed money-maker with suspicion.
The traders who succeed with SMC are the ones who pair it with the boring fundamentals: risk management and discipline.
